  2. How to deepen student engagement by incorporating texts
  3. What seeing like a reader and hearing like a reader means
  4. Activities that foster engagement
  5. AND MORE!

A kindergarten teacher looked at me last week and said this, in regard to teaching,
“I didn’t know how relaxed I could be.”
“I can have fun.”

I was surprised by her honesty as I sat beside her after a whole-class lesson.  (This is my job now, to share the nearly thirty years of teaching and studying with teachers.)

The idea of stiffness and compliance comes naturally in a world of high expectations and accountability.

But what if you could …

  •  Bring joy
  •  Feel like students are engaging purposefully (versus out of compliance)
  •  Have fun
  •  AND get the outcomes you dreamed of?

Wouldn’t you run towards that and not look back?

That is what I DID DO!

I had a dream that all students

  •  Had more time reading
  •  Owned more texts
  •  Felt confident in their skills

My name is Jennifer Burns, I am an author and literacy specialist helping teachers to  create whole class lessons that change gradually to meet the needs of their students. These lessons engage students in such a way that the print comes off of the page and into their eyes, ears, mouths and thoughts.  When they have this level of control ... texts and materials can transfer with students into independent stations.

The GOAL -  Decrease planning time and increase impact through student practice.
